WILMA HARRIS, OMAS MEMBER
|
This months feature OMAS tank belongs to Wilma Harris of
Skiatook. Wilma, who is a science teacher for Skiatook High School, has been
involved in the hobby for around two years. She enjoys reefkeeping because of
the beauty of her inhabitants, and the calming, soothing effect staring at her
glass box gives her. Wilma's fascination with reef ecosystems began while on
vacation in the Florida Keys. After returning home she decided she would like
to have a piece of Florida in her home and has been collecting cool little
critters ever since then.
Wilma's tank is a standard Perfecto 75 gallon (48x18x20) with a perfecto stand and canopy. She runs a Euroreef skimmer for her mechanical filtration. She has an All Glass Aquariums acrylic sump with a built in refugium where she harvests chaetomorpha. Her lighting consists of two 150 watt HQI metal halide lamps, where she is running the EVC 14k bulbs. For supplemental actinic lighting she has two 54 watt ATI Blue Plus bulbs. For flow Wilma runs two Maxijet 1200's with the rotating Hydor flow diffusers and one of the new Tunze Nanostream 6025, as well as the return pump from her sump. H er tank inhabitatants include 1 Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens), 1 Assai Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus assai), 1 Coral Beauty Angelfish (Centropyge bispinosa), 1 Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera), 1 Neon Dottyback (Pseudochromis aldabraensis), and two Nemo's (Amphiprion ocellaris). Her cleanup crew consists of your standard assortment of snails and crabs as well as dilligent manual labor. She has many different coral genera and species, which include LPS, SPS, zoanthids, protopalythoa, leathers, mushrooms and so on. She has a two different clams, a Tridacna derasa, and a Tridacna maxima. Wilma's tank epitomizes what a mixed reef should look like.As far as maintenence goes, Wilma uses the Randy Holmes Farley DIY two part Calcium and Alkalinity recipe to keep those respective paramaters in check (for more info on this recipe see the link at the end of this bio). Bi-weekly ten percent water changes are done to keep nutrients low, and she tops off using RO/DI water every other day. She feeds and assortment of food consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, Ocean Nutrition flakes, and Cyclopeeze. Later in the year Wilma and Dean Harris have agreed to open up the doors to their beautiful lakefront home to us, the minions of OMAS, for a barbecue. Those who attend will be able to see her reef in person. I urge all that can attend to do so as it will be a fun event for everyone.
